June 20th, 2008 Colon Cleansing The Natural Way

Colon cleansing involves a process called detoxification. Detoxification is geared toward clearing out toxins in the body by means of neutralizing or transforming them, as well as clearing excess mucus and congestion in the colon. Most of the toxins that are congesting the colon come from the food we eat, drugs we use, or environmental exposure both acute and chronic.

Fats (especially oxidized fats) and cholesterol, free radicals as well as other irritating molecules act as toxins. Likewise, poor digestion, colon sluggishness and dysfunction, reduced liver function and poor waste disposal by the kidneys, respiratory tract and skin all contribute to increased toxins in the colon.

Detoxification is very important for healthy living as well as enhancing the elimination of toxins in the colon and throughout the body. Minimized intake of some chemicals from food and other sources like refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco, as well as many drugs helps to remove toxins in the body. The process of detoxification actually calls for a lifestyle change and smart selections of food.

For detoxifying or cleansing the colon, it is also important to include probiotics in your diet in order to replenish the good bacteria in the intestines. A probiotic is an organism which contributes to the health and balance of bacteria in the intestinal tract. It’s also commonly referred to as the body’s friendly bacteria and helps in fighting illness and diseases.

A healthy intestine contains at least 85% of beneficial bacteria to prevent over colonization of disease causing organisms like salmonella and E. coli. But sadly, most people do not have the required amount of friendly bacteria in their intestine, resulting to various colon related diseases. Probiotics are also excellent immune system enhancers since they prevent unfriendly organisms from congesting the body. Probiotics also prevent overgrowth of yeast and fungus and produces substances that lower cholesterol.

Why Colon Cleansing is important?

Regular bowel movements are vital for maintaining a healthy body. Irregular bowel movements are an indication of future colon problems. This is the reason why eating a nutritious, well balanced diet is so important. The typical diet of most people today includes a great deal of refined sugar, white flour and hormone/antibiotic-filled meats. These types of foods contribute to the demise of our colons.

Colon cancer is the second deadliest cancer, causing deaths not only in the US but also in other parts of the world. This is also the reason why it is essential to have a healthy, correctly functioning colon. Colon cleansing is vital for the elimination of congestions and toxins in the intestine.

Constipation is one of the most common bowel problems faced by a great number of people. Constipation is a condition wherein there is a slow transit time for waste matter to leave the body. The transit time refers to the amount of time that toxic waste matter remains in the bowel. A long transit time will cause the toxic waste to decay, ferment and most probably be reabsorbed by the body. And the longer the body is exposed to waste the greater the possibility of contracting a disease because the stockpiled waste is a fertile breeding ground for diseases.

Disease in the colon usually starts with a toxic bowel. Infrequent or poor bowel movements over extended periods of time can be very hazardous to the body.

Natural Way of Cleansing your Colon

The natural way of colon cleansing involves a cleansing diet of some herbs that are known to kill parasites and worms, also included are digestive enzymes, probiotics, herbs that stimulate the liver, gallbladder and intestines, psyllium husk or seeds, cascara sagrada or flax seeds, or slippery elm and many more.

Herbs are good in intestinal cleansing since they get rid of pounds of foul smelling food debris that have been stocked inside the colon. The most commonly used herb is psyllium, a natural, water-soluble, gel-reducing fiber that is extracted from the husks of blond psyllium seeds.

A standard bowel cleanse should contain the following:

1. Water, juices, raw fruits and vegetables

2. Probiotics to help replenish the good bacteria in the intestines

3. Psyllium husk and/or seeds or flax seeds help absorb water and expand the colon allowing for the removal of toxins and mucus.

4. Bentonite clay is edible clay that acts as a laxative by absorbing water and then forming a gel. It binds toxins and helps to carry them out of the colon.

5. Salt water enema

However, please remember that you should consult a medical professional for advice before starting any new health regime.

June 10th, 2008 You Could Be Causing Your Own Insomnia

Many of us experience the occasional night of sleeplessness; it is when the occasional night becomes a pattern of several nights in a row that you are faced with a sleeping problem.

Repeated loss of sleep affects all areas of your life: The physical, the mental, and the emotional. Sleep deprivation can affect your overall daily performance and can even have an effect on your personality.

If your sleeplessness continues for a long period of time it can cause problems in your relationships, reduce your productivity, and it may lead to other health problems.

These three things are often major culprits in keeping you awake.

1. Uncomfortable temperature-Make sure the temperature in your room is comfortable. The ideal temperature for sleeping is between 65 and 70 degrees, of course you will have to experiment to find the temperature that is most comfortable for you.

2. Noise-Many people are sensitive to noise and will either wake up or be unable to fall asleep because of noise. A white noise machine is an excellent device used to mask annoying noise and allow you to sleep.

3. Light-As with noise many people are bothered by too much light. Make sure your bedroom is as dark as possible. Lined window coverings or room darkening blinds may be necessary on your windows. A sleep mask is another alternative.

It is a good idea to keep track of your sleeping habits using a sleep log to record bedtime, wake time and any details regarding your sleep patterns. Doing this, will let you see if certain things are contributing to your sleeplessness. You can then work to eliminate or change the things that are causing problems. Many times prescription sleep aids are taken when natural remedies are all that is needed.

April 3rd, 2008 Handling Severe Depression

Copyright 2005 Mark Myhre

As long as I live, I’ll never forget the feeling of my mouth
wrapped around the cold blue steel of the 6 in. barrel of my
Ruger Blackhawk .357 single action revolver.

I was so close to pulling the trigger. And nobody ever knew.

It seemed like I could turn on the ‘manic’ phase at will - and
be as friendly and outgoing and talkative as the situation
required. But as soon as I was alone again, I’d start sinking
down, down, down.

Those days are long gone - and I doubt they’re ever coming back.
I’ve found too many tools I can use to feel better. (Mostly
because I learned the value of embracing and releasing my
emotions!)

But what do you do - when the argument to kill yourself becomes
too strong? …and a little too logical?

“Hey - I gave it my best shot. I tried. God knows I tried. But I
failed. This pain will never end. C’mon Mark - you know that.
Nothing could be worse than these feelings. You know you’ll be
doing the world a favor. Go ahead. Get it over with. Do it
now…”

You hear that stuff in your head and you start believing it.

When you’re in that place of total despair - your options become
quite limited.

One option involves taking antidepressants. And under those
circumstances - who could blame you?

In my opinion, this may perhaps be the only real situation where
taking a depression medication truly qualifies as an appropriate
response. Especially if you can’t do the second option.

The second option involves understanding the many different
emotional levels, and “working your way up the ladder”. Climbing
up from where you are now, to a different emotional state that
feels better.

All emotions exists on a scale, from the most positively
expansive down to the most negatively constrictive.

Most of the time, we feel stuck on whatever level we’re at -
especially when we’re on the lower end of the scale.

True depression - along with the thoughts and feelings it
generates - lies at the very bottom of this scale. Nothing is
worse than severe depression. It’s the lowest level of all
possible emotional states.

See, when you’re truly crushed by depression - you’re not likely
to just snap out of it and feel wonderful. At best, you’ll
usually fake it for a short time by going into manic behavior,
and then end up right where you started from.

But if you can correctly identify where you’re at right now -
emotionally speaking - then you have a starting point with which
to work. And once you have a starting point, then you can reach
and stretch for the best possible thoughts and feelings
available to you.

Loneliness is one step up from the crushing weight of
depression. When you’ve reached the total despair of
hopelessness and depression - even feeling painfully lonely is a
step in the right direction.

Beyond that lies hate and rage. Being consumed with hate is two
steps up from depression. Much better to feel hate than to feel
depression.

Am I telling you to feel hate?

Yes, if you’re currently lonely or depressed, definitely reach
for your hate. Not to stay there, but as one step on the
emotional ladder.

There’s a lot of passion in hate.

If you’re *not* lonely, depressed, hopeless, empty or hollow -
then don’t go for hate!

The goal is to always reach for a better feeling state.

It starts with knowing where you’re at right now. It starts with
awareness of what you’re thinking and feeling.

If you will take a sheet of paper and write out all your
thoughts -

and then take another sheet and write down all your feelings -

…you will begin to find your hope. And a tiny bit of your
power.

“Going through” your emotions strengthens you. And one way to
start going through your emotions is to write them down.

Go through your emotions. You could imagine yourself walking
through a minefield or a battlefield, if that’s what it takes.
Embrace your emotions by walking into them. Release your
emotions by walking out the other side. That’s one way to
embrace and release your emotions.

Anytime you embrace and release your thoughts and feelings -
you’ll find yourself a tiny bit stronger.

If you’re depressed - write it out. Then FEEL what you’ve
written. Then you can reach for loneliness.

If you’re lonely, do the same with *those* thoughts and
feelings, so you can reach for hate. Not to stay there, but as
one step up the ladder.

(See the full list at http://www.emotional-times.com/blog.html)

The key is to STOP AVOIDING those horrible feelings. Instead, go
*into* them and out the other side.

That’s how you climb the ladder and start feeling better.

April 1st, 2008 Lasik Eye Surgery With Fewer Risks Using IntraLase

The introduction of laser eye surgery a number of years ago -
first via the PRK procedure and then using LASIK (an acronym for
Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis) - marked a major step
forward in vision correction without having to wear eyeglasses
or contact lenses.

Whilst the LASIK procedure has proven very popular with millions
of successful operations carried out around the world, there has
always been a slight risk of an unsuccessful operation or of
complications. These risks are primarily associated with the
first stage of the operation in which a hand-held microkeratome
blade is used to create a corneal flap. This flap is of vital
importance to the overall success of the operation. If it is too
thick or too thin or incorrectly shaped it could adversely
affect the quality of vision.

Advances in laser technology have now made it possible to reduce
the risks associated with LASIK eye surgery through a procedure
known as IntraLase. The IntraLase procedure performs the first
crucial part of the operation without use of a blade and as such
improves on the safety, precision and outcome of traditional
LASIK surgery.

With IntraLase, the corneal flap is created by the surgeon using
a computer-guided laser with great precision, enabling the
surgeon to have exact control over its dimensions. Accuracy is
achievable within the range +/-10 microns. The result being that
the flap can be tailored to meet the precise needs of each
individual patient. It even means that patients who aren’t
suitable candidates for traditional LASIK due to having corneas
that are too thin, can now benefit from the operation.

Furthermore, by using IntraLase LASIK there is a much reduced
risk of the corneal flap being displaced - a complication which
can arise with the microkeratome operation. IntraLase creates a
distinct beveled edge to the flap, enabling precise
repositioning and alignment after the procedure. This results in
optimal healing of the cornea following the operation.

The IntraLase operation is also quicker than traditional LASIK -
depending on the laser used, typically 30 seconds per eye as
opposed to around one minute. This has the benefit of greater
comfort and less worry for the patient.

With regard to outcome of the procedure, results of clinical
studies indicate that IntraLase patients have better resultant
vision than those who underwent the traditional LASIK procedure
employing a manual blade technique. The following are some of
the benefits:

* More patients achieved 20/20 or better vision * Reduced
frequency of post-operative night-time glare and halos * Reduced
incidence of dry eye symptoms * Fewer enhancement procedures
needed following the initial operation * Reduced frequency of
induced astigmatism after the operation * Patient satisfaction
much higher in those expressing a preference

The cost of an IntraLase operation is higher than that of
traditional LASIK eye surgery. About a 20% increase has been
quoted. However the added degree of safety combined with the
promise of better vision is persuading increasingly more laser
eye surgery patients to opt for IntraLase.
