November 6th, 2009 The Double Gut Shot

Poker pundits say to never bet an inside straight. An inside straight or “gut shot” straight is when you have four cards to the straight, but need one card in the middle to complete it.

For instance, you pocket cards are 8-10 and 6-7-2 comes out on the flop. You need the inside 9 to complete your straight. There are only four cards that can complete your straight, which is why it’s considered long odds - about 11-1.

However, sometimes an online poker player hits a double gut shot, in which there are two inside cards that can complete a straight. You have two ways to do it, if for instance, your pocket cards are 4-10, and the flop comes 6-7-8. Both the 5 or the 9 will complete your straight, giving you twice as many outs as the closed ended gut shot draw.

A double gut shot has odds about 2-1 on the flop, much better than the single gut shot.

Double gut shot draws are rare and sometimes tricky to spot. Look for a board that has three consecutive cards. Remember, every straight also has to have a 5 or 10, so look to see if either of these cards will complete a double gut shot for your hand. Keep this in mind when you play online poker.
