April 14th, 2009 Internet is the Greatest Modern Day Invention

The internet has topped a recent survey carried out by YouGov with 37 per cent of the 1,977 individuals questioned agreeing that it is indeed the ‘greatest modern invention’. Internet beat other top contenders, the mobile phone and Mp3 player to claim the top spot.

The Intellectual Property Office had collaborated with Aardman Animations for this survey, which was to be presented on the inauguration of a new exhibition at the Science Museum in London. The exhibition titled ‘Cracking Ideas‘ was featuring the UK’s best loved fictional inventors, Wallace and Gromit.

The internet can possibly remain the top pick for the UK population for some time to come, with super fast connections making the technology more and more important everyday. For the latest broadband offerings, take a look at Broadband Genie - a website all about broadband.

The developer of the wind-up radio, Trevor Baylis, says that we have come to take the internet for granted, and rely on it for many important tasks. According to him, superfast broadband’s easy availability and the extraordinary growth of the social networking sites has led to people getting hooked to the internet.

The fate of the UK’s economic growth depends on how much encouragement is given to the development and safeguarding of future inventions. The coming generations should follow in the footprints of the past inventors, added Baylis.
