February 27th, 2009 Online Conferencing Calls Create Opportunities to Cut Wasteful Company Overhead

Crude oil costs are rising and as a result, business expenses are pressed short harder than previously. As the nations economic output lumbers along slowly and capital remains scarce, prudent directories realize additional expenses have to be cut. Business people throughout the nation must make more than a couple weighty decisions to shrink expenses. One of the best option to cut business costs is to make slashes in frivolous travel budgets, and the secret is Internet conference calling.

Web conference calls permit executives to communicate with clients wirelessly in a meeting in a far away town, in a far off state or most definitely in another continent. Typical Internet conference calling employ new streaming technology. Due to the fact that they are delivered over the net, they merely consume sunk organizational outlays. Just from using the Internet, may an executive conduct a international conference from almost any place with Internet access. Not only is it convenient, it can save travel costs five digits or more in a year.

Break throughs in digital technology make web conferencing calls a good choice for people to exchange presentations and information in real time. Web conference attendees can see and hear as though they were in the same room, despite the fact that on the other side of the planet earth. The detail of the presentations audio and video should be without flaw given the top in streaming video.

Obviously just about any business should increase profits by using web conference calling rather than spending thousands dispatching an executive on a big trip. A business shouldnt spend on hotels, meals or even transportation. These trimmings matter over a year. Any dollar saved translates to increased profit for a company. It’s not surprising that the smart organizations are implementing web conferencing to reduce overhead on low-priority sales journeys.

February 26th, 2009 Resurrection Faith (Part 3)

During His ministry, Jesus often made references to His impending death but the disciples, apparently so consumed with their own agenda for Jesus, missed the meaning of Jesus’ words. Thus, when He was crucified, it caught them totally off guard. They could not comprehend what had happened. They were confused, hurt, utterly discouraged, depressed and defeated. All the Gospels testify to the depressed, unexpectant mood of the disciples after Jesus’ death.

The women who went to the tomb prepared to embalm Jesus’ body were obviously expecting Jesus’ body to be there and were thoroughly discombobulated when they discovered He was not there. Two men appeared to them and reminded them that Jesus had risen just as He had foretold. Luke tells us that when the women told the disciples of their experience at the tomb and that Jesus had risen, the disciples thought they were talking foolishness (24:11). Matthew states that on the occasion of Christ’s meeting with His followers in Galilee, they saw Him and some still doubted (18:17).

Yet, it is exactly because the disciples did not understand Jesus, confused by His death and not expecting the resurrection that we know that something dramatic and earth shattering had to have taken place to create in them a faith that believed Jesus was alive - resurrection faith.

Christians everywhere believe and affirm that what happened was the disciples personal eye witness of the risen Lord. Even though the disciples (and others) did not actually see Jesus rise from the tomb; they did not see His mortal physical body transformed and rise as immortal and spiritual and they do not make this claim. But, what they do claim is that they did see Him after He had risen. And it is because they saw Him as the risen Christ that their lives were changed; so much so that they were willing to sacrifice their lives in His name and for His sake.

The apostle Paul hangs the entire corpus of Christian truth and eschatological hope on the factuality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Some disbelievers in the resurrection suggest the plausibility of one being able to doubt the historical actuality of the resurrection and still believe in God as the creator and sustainer of the world. However, Paul fiercefully maintains that if Jesus in not raised, we are misrepresenting God; in fact, the entire Bible is misrepresenting God.

If Jesus is not raised:

- Redemptive history ends in a cul-de-sac.
- God is not the living God, nor is He the God of the living as Jesus said in Mark 12:27.
- Death is stronger than God and stronger than His word.
- God’s acts are futile in the face of man’s greatest enemy - death.
- The claims Jesus made during His ministry are blatant lies and His entire message is negated.
- The heart of the New Testament Christology is a delusion because the central confession of the early church was not Jesus as Savior but Jesus as Lord.
- Jesus did not conquer death, death conquered Him.
- Jesus cannot defend His people in judgment and the whole doctrine of justification is a figment of the imagination.
- Those who have died believing have perished and God’s promises with them.

Without the living Jesus Christ, the Christian faith would have been destroyed by the crucifixion and in the return of the apostles to the synagogue and to Judaism all of His teachings would have been buried under the rubble of oblivion.

But as people witnessed the resurrection, something happened to them. Something happened to create a faith so strong that men and women were willing to devote their lives to preaching Christ Jesus, by any means necessary and whatever the personal cost.

Peter, who denied Him three times, stood outside the upper room preaching Christ boldly. James, the skeptic, assumed a position of leadership in the Jerusalem church. He was transformed from a non-believer to a believer. Nicodemus who approached Jesus at midnight desiring to know what he must do to be saved, now proclaims, “This must have been the Son of God.” Thomas, who refused to believe unless he saw Jesus for himself, after seeing Him cried out, “My Lord and my God.”

Lives were and are changed by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus stepped forth from the grave, leaving the grave clothes behind. He stepped out in new life, in new strength, and in new power.

Christian believers accept the Biblical witness to the resurrection, not because of logical proof; not because of historical reasoning but because of an inner testimony of the gospel. Our faith is not in history - but in God who acts in history. The Christian faith is resurrection faith.

February 26th, 2009 Fiction Meets Spirituality and Science

Fiction Meets Spirituality and Science Author Interview with Kevin D. McMahon, Garments of Skin: A Genomic Apocalypse, Book 1 by Lisa M. Hendey

Kevin McMahon is first and foremost a teacher, family man, and a deeply spiritual person. In his spare time, he has written and published two books. Kevin’s writing came to my attention when I heard him speak recently at a writing conference. Although his topic related to the process of print-on-demand publishing, it was the fascinating subject matter of his novel Garments of Skin: A Genomic Apocalypse, Book 1 that caught and held my attention.

Garments of Skin tackles timely technological issues, weaving ethics and science into a book that is at once instructional and entertaining. Scientifically-challenged readers like me need not shy away from the book due to the inclusion of the word “genomic” in the title. McMahon’s teaching skills and fantastic creativity make this book highly readable. In our world, advances in reproductive and medical technology continue at a lightening pace. This makes McMahon’s book relevant to today’s ethical dilemmas and pose pressing questions about what the future may hold.

Kevin McMahon shared the following thoughts with me on his book and the writing and publication process.

Q: Please tell our readers a bit about yourself and your family.

I met my wife, Janice, while we were both attending an Evangelical church. We have two daughters, Megan and Breanna. Megan is currently in college and plans on becoming a high school English teacher. Breanna is at the school where I teach, Reseda Science Magnet. About ten years ago my wife and I left our Evangelical church and started attending a local Catholic church. A few years after that we converted to Orthodoxy and now attend Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Northridge, California.

Q: Please briefly describe the plot of Garments of Skin.

The book is a little bit like Frankenstein in that Shelly was attempting to write about the potential consequences of the hubris of human nature as it manifest itself in science. My book, of course, is an updated version of this Promethian tale in that it deals with what happens when man attempts to take the divine fire of life from the heavens, or as I state it in Biblical terms, when he breaks through the fiery sword guards the Tree of Life.

So I approach the whole issue of the stem-cell debate a little differently, that is, I move beyond the ethical debate into the ontological side of things. Just as the sin of Adam and Eve had an ontological consequence on human nature I am suggesting that the application of embryonic stem-cells may alter the very nature of humanity. To explain this I employ the Eastern Christian (Orthodox) theology of the garments of skin. I should add though, that unlike Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein which ends in fear and despair my book focuses on hope and redemption.

Q: What prompts a high school science teacher to take on the task of writing a religious thriller? From where did the idea for this book originate?

As a science teacher in public school I deal with a default setting that tends to not consider the moral content of scientific progress, or if consideration is given, more often than not, students and colleagues tend to take a utilitarian approach. What I have found however, is a surprising degree of openness when I have discussed with students and fellow teachers issues such as stem-cell research from a thoughtful, Christian perspective. But it takes time to develop persuasive arguments and often people don’t have the time, or want to think that hard or long about a subject. As a result I thought that perhaps such people could be persuaded if they were offered the information in an entertaining manner. Consequently, this book was written not for the “choir” but for a secular audience and thus far I have had more nonreligious people reading the book and giving me favorable reviews of it than even religious folk. I am gratified by this but I believe a religious audience would also enjoy and benefit my Genomic Apocalypse series.

Now as for where I get my ideas–that is almost a mystery to me. I might have to refer you to the Muses or to the writings of the Orthodox philosopher, Nicholi Berdyaev, who spoke of dipping into the deep nothingness of our own hearts to create, like God, ex nihilo, that is, from nothing. I guess this is just a fancy way of saying, I really don’t know where the ideas come from.

Q: What kind of research did you undertake in writing this book?

There were three areas of research that this book required. Obviously there is the science part–the stem-cell business. That part wasn’t too difficult given that I have degrees in biological sciences. Then there were the theological and philosophical aspects of the story. I read numerous books on these topics, again mostly Eastern Orthodox theology. Finally, I researched geo-political topics as the type of biotechnological breakthrough I wrote about would inevitably have enormous consequences world-wide.

Q: How does your faith impact your writing? Did you ever consider writing this book without the religious element?

My faith is so interwoven with who I am I cannot even imagine how I could write a book without it slipping in someway–although perhaps I could slip it in more subtly. Maybe someday I will. For me, I try to express my Christian faith in all I do–I see little difference between my life at Church, my life at home with my family, my life as a public school teacher, or as a writer.

Q: Do you resemble any of the characters in this book? Do any of them have a basis in real people you know?

Goodness, I suspect that the people in my book are either better or worse than I am–I’m probably somewhere between a Maria and an Obermann! Do any of the characters resemble people I’ve known? I think so. My first years as a teacher was in East Los Angeles–I’ve known a few Maria’s: very bright, attractive young ladies who were drawn into gang life and who were sometimes extracted by the help of others, like the math teacher who helped get Maria out of the barrio. I’ve also known a few McIntyre’s–great men of God who always stood firm in the face of adversity.

It seems to me that technological advances have greatly complicated medical and technological ethics questions. What forecast do you have for these types of advances and how can Christians and ethicists keep pace and respond to our changing world?

As far as the first part of your question, I started writing this book around 1998 and I have since then witnessed about half of what I have written about already come to pass. If I were to play the prophet I would say that it is inevitable that almost everything in the book, technologically, will happen. I am sure some people will find that hard to believe but just wait–it will happen within our life-time.

Now as far as what Christians need to do–first, they must know their faith. They must be grounded in their relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. This becomes the touchstone upon which they can deduce the answers to all ethical dilemmas. Of course, I would suggest they buy my book–they’ll get the information they need and will enjoy learning it at the same time!

Q: I know that you took a non-traditional path toward the publication of this book. What advice do you have for authors who have a desire to share their message in book format but may not be finding success in publication?

Frankly, I never really sought a traditional path. I am a full time teacher–that’s my real job; writing is a hobby. I didn’t want to go through the expense, hassle, and the emotional roller-coaster associated with trying to get my book published in a “traditional” manner. Also, my topic is so “hot off the press” so-to-speak that I wanted my ideas out there quickly. I thought this would be a good way to do it. Finally, I think you will find that more and more authors are going to turn to print-on-demand and other “nontraditional” means of publication.

My advice for those who want to go the way I did is that you should find someone to help you edit your book because most big publishing houses will work with you on that whereas if you publish yourself you are on your own. Secondly, be prepared for the long haul when it comes to getting your book out there and known. You have to be aggressive and push the book in people’s faces. I find that the most difficult part of the whole process.

Q: What is the key to successfully completing a work of fiction? How did you overcome obstacles that came up along your writing path?

First of all, I think you need to know where you want to go, what’s the end game of the story. Then let the end draw you. Along the way your characters are drawn to this end, and as they are drawn to whatever the end is for them they need to change authentically– they must be real, believable, and interesting people. I think most readers want to read about interesting people and how they respond and change to circumstances. And in this sense, the story line is secondary to the characters. Readers like to identify with characters and wonder what they would do under similar circumstances.

The biggest obstacles I faced were either being tired (since I had to write late in the evening) and feeling that my head was a block of wood (ie, not feeling very creative). To this I would recommend–write any way. You can edit it or throw it out altogether, but you can’t edit or throw out nothing so if you fancy yourself a writer you have to write even when you don’t feel like it or feel particularly creative.

Q: Do you have any future writing projects?

Yes, I have already written and published Book II of the Genomic Apocalypse series, The Daughter of Abraham. I need to start working on Book III, but I started writing a book on theology and epistemology. I hope to have that done in a year so that I can get to Book III.

Q: Are there any additional thoughts or comments you’d like to share?

Yes, I like to thank you for taking the time to read my book and ask me these probing questions. Finally, if any of your readers would like to reach me they can contact me at kevindmcmahon@yahoo.com

February 24th, 2009 Contract Bedroom Furnishings Design on the Web

Selecting furniture for your bedroom couldn’t be easier than when looking at contract furniture. There will be a range of furniture available to suit you, no matter what impression you wish to give with your décor.

They say you should never judge a book by it’s cover but we are all probably guilty of making assumptions about a person based on what their home looks like. Just like the clothes we wear, the décor in our home makes a statement about our personality. Our character and behaviour is quite often represented by the colours and furniture we choose to live with. A busy working life with long days at the office may be represented with a tidy, unlived-in kind of home, whereas a family home may have a large dining table and comfy sofas located centrally in the home indicating important quality family time.

Though visitors might not be privy to it, the decorations of a bedroom - particularly one that is deep with reds and satin - indicate a different side to our character. When planning our home’s decor, separating public areas from private is a good idea. Even when you are entertaining guests at a party, you will not want to allow them access to all parts of the home, and will want to keep parts of it separate and private.

Many will choose to decorate their bedroom with a little more luxury, this is after all, your private space. Fluffy rugs or carpets are a common addition to rooms where there is less traffic. Soft, luxurious cushions and pillows on your bed provide comfortable support. You are unlikely to furnish your living room with these as the risk of them being over used or damaged is too high.

February 23rd, 2009 Why I Hate Blogs!

A couple of years ago, when I first came across these viral infections making their way across the Internet I was thoroughly unimpressed. Blogs seemed to be nothing more than sophisticated “diaries”. Indeed, many web sites offered what were called live journals, originally started as a place for kids to keep their diaries. What was interesting is that they kept it up on the web so their parents would not get a hold of it, but the whole world was allowed access to these diaries. Blogs seemed to be the next step, feeding the dreams of frustrated authors wanting to get something off their chests and trying to get the rest of the world to listen.

I grew to hate Blogs.

As time went on, Blogs still earned my disdain. Becoming ever-more-popular, now they were the realm of would-be webmasters. Those who could not really understand the intricacies of the web and the creation of “real” HTML pages went to the ever increasing number of servers offering free Blog space and software. There they created within limitations of the Blog what would be called “mini web sites”. Oh, nothing with the sophistication of their 500000 page full blown web-site cousins, but nevertheless something that could be looked upon as a place to disseminate information within the vast pits of the world wide web.

I still hated Blogs.

Then as the weeks and months rolled by and the major players such as Google entered the Blog craze, the serious snobs of Internet technology began to take notice. It was the revolt of the plebeians against those who spent their lives matching colors, memorizing Hex Codes, creating menus and finding content for their sites. The Bloggers had the audacity to put up their pages within minutes and begin to start writing, adding, composing and generally taking on the world in the time it took to create the bare shell of one web page. My God! They even used spell checkers!

Oh boy, did I really hate Blogs then.

Then, and when I think upon it to this day, I still cringe - the inevitable happened. One of my clients in a show of how “technologically-minded” he was, began telling me all about his Blog. Trying to impress me with terms such as “tables” and “permalinks” and telling me how he learned HTML by messing with his Blog template, made my blood pressure shoot through the roof.

“Hey,” he said with a big evil grin on his face, “It isn’t that hard! You always made it seem so mysterious. I mean I Blog all the time!”

At that moment I could have thermally burned every Blog in the universe.

And of course I could not get over the useless amount of information that was out there in these Blogs. Millions upon millions of web pages, or precious gigabytes, of golden bandwidth taken up with the musings of people who had nothing better to do! And the Blogs still kept on growing.

I hated them.

Then it happened. I knew it would. I knew it had to. I just knew it. A client asked me why I didn’t have a Blog for my company. After all, Web Sites are great but Blogs he said, were ever better. And so I bit the bullet and put up a one page Blog, linked my “web-site” to it and promptly after 3 days forgot all about it. Let the Bloggers have their Blogs. Real Men & Ladies do Web Sites!

One day while I was about to tear out what was left of my hair in the good old war with the Search Engine Trinity - Google, Yahoo and MSN - trying to figure out just why one keyword was working and the 9,999 others were not, and why my page rank was moving like a yo-yo, and I felt no matter what I did to improve my rank only made it worse, SUDDENLY I see in MSN my site pop up on the first page where it had never been before. At least I thought it was my site. So doing a dance in my chair, and yelling YES YES YES - I click on the link and voila, suddenly my stomach churns in disgust and total nausea. I am brought face-to-face with the Blog I put up 3 months beforehand. NOT MY WEB SITE! MY BLOG!

I hate Blogs with a passion. But you better believe you will find me Blogging every day from now on.

February 23rd, 2009 For Wordpress users version 1.5 new feature “Pages”

After many requests from wordpress users, the latest version of wordpress has a build in option to create static pages. You can use static pages for an about page, contact page, a links page, etc. This dreamhost review page is an example of a stand alone static page. The advantages are that you can add stand alone content to its own page, outside the normal weblog hierarchy. Pages have the same editing options, plug-in functionality and themes as posts. Or you can customize the stand alone page as much as you want. Static pages also help search engine indexing, as opposed to dynamic urls.

The comprehensive overview and instructions are on the wordpress codex “pages” page.

“A Note on Nomenclature

A page can be static or dynamic. Static pages are those which have been created once and do not have to be regenerated every time a person visits it. In contrast, dynamic pages do need to be regenerated every time they are viewed; code for what to generate has been specified by the author, but not the actual page itself. These use extensive PHP code which is evaluated each time the page is visited, and the content is thus generated on the fly, upon each new visit.”

This article is perfect for a quick blog post. The byline need not be included. Please publish this article as is, including all links.

February 19th, 2009 Do You Want Reduced Cost Auto Insurance?

With sky-rocketing car insurance costs, cost concious people everywhere are looking for ways to get deals on car insurance. And why not? If it can save you some cash then go for it, right? Well, there are many ways to get discounts on car insurance. Try to check if you or your car is entitled for the following deductions but remember that these are general deductions, you have to inquire with your insurer if they offer them.

Personal-Related Deductions

These price reductions are usually given based on your performance as a driver and insurance policy owner. The other discounts are given based on your present status in life.

  • Going to Traffic School If by any chance you have recently been ticketed, you may attend traffic school either online or through a traditional setting to have your ticket expunged from your driving history. Indirectly, this will have an effect of lowering your yearly auto insurance costs
  • Good Student Price Reductions. You may also take into consideration your childs GPA to get car insurance price reductions. If youre insuring your child who drives and he satisfies the grade requirements of the insurance company, you may ultimately receive discounts as well.
  • deductions for Your Profession. There are many professions that can make you entitled for auto insurance price reductions. Surgeons, engineers, government employees, to name a few, all may be entitled to receive discounts on their car insurance.
  • Senior Citizen Discount. If youre a mature driver, aged 55 or over and have completed a Defensive Driving course being offered by the DMV in your state, then you may qualify for a discount.
  • Loyalty Programs. Staying with the same insurance provider for several years and maintaining a clean driving record will give you a positive history with them. Many times, the insurance underwriter will reward you with your loyalty with lower insurance rates.
  • Keep a Clean Driving Record. If you’ve not been involved in any car accidents or have had any tickets for traffic violations, you should be able to get your auto insurance costs reduced.
  • Home + Car Packages. Your insurance company may give you multi-line price reductions if you insure your household and other cars with them as well.
  • Car-Related Deductions

It doesn’t come as a surprise that when getting a automobile insurance policy, the insurance underwriter takes a look at your car. Some of these car insurance discounts are given because you’ve purchased a safe car.

    1. Car Air Bags. There are various types of airbags: front, rear, side-curtain, etc. The greater you’re protected, the cheaper your car insurance could be.
    2. Anti-Lock Brakes System (ABS). Many automobiles on the road today are equipped with ABS. Many insurers offer discounts if your car is fit with these types of brakes and many states even require the insurance firm to do so.
    3. Anti-Theft Devices. Installation of anti-theft devices like car alarms is a way to get insurance discounts. There may be an added bonus if the alarm automatically turns on when the car’s turned off.

February 19th, 2009 Benefits to RSS

RSS streamlines communication between publishers and readers. Since RSS has had a popularity surge, webmasters have been experimenting and using RSS feeds to deliver content in new and innovative ways. Typically, RSS feeds contain news headlines and content summaries. The content summaries contain just enough information without overwhelming the reader with superfluous details. If the reader is interested and wants additional information they can click on the item in the feed, accessing the website which contains additional details. RSS readers aggregate multiple feeds, making it easy for individuals to quickly scan information contained within each feed. Feeds are generally themed, allowing users to opt-in to feeds that are of interest.

The big benefit to RSS is that individuals opt-in to content of interest, totally controlling the flow of information that they receive. If the quality of the content in the feed declines, users simply remove the feed from their RSS reader and they will not receive any additional updates from that source. The RSS reader acts as an aggregator, allowing users to view and scan multiple content streams in a timely fashion.

RSS is a great supplemental communication method that does not burden the publisher with maintaining lists or following strict privacy guidelines. RSS feeds are compiled according to the user’s choices, removing any burden that is placed on publishers of email newsletters. Publishers no longer need to be concerned with spam, privacy policies, and age guidelines.

Publishers using RSS as a communication vehicle are able to create keyword-rich, themed content, establishing trust, reputation, and ongoing communication with current and prospective customers.

What Kind of Information Can be Delivered in RSS Feeds?

    Blogs Feed

Many blogs are catalogued in an RSS feed, with each blog entry summarized as a feed item. This makes it easy for visitors to scan blog posts for items of interest.

    Article Feed

Articles are often placed into feeds to alert readers when new articles and content are available. The feed entry is typically an article summary or introduction. Readers can then ascertain if the article is of interest and read further.

    Forum Feed

Many forums now have add-ons that allow participants to receive forum posts via RSS. The RSS feeds often will show the latest discussion topics; if users are interested they simply click to enter the forum to participate in the discussion. As the topic is updated they will see new entries in the RSS feed.

    Schedule Feed

Schools, clubs and organizations will often use feeds to communicate meeting times, places and events that might be occurring. The RSS feeds are often used to publicize events, notify the community of schedule changes or meeting agendas.

    Discounts / Specials Feed

Retail and online stores have begun using RSS feeds to deliver their latest specials and discounted offers. Some online retailers have taken this a step further, allowing users to create their own feeds based on keywords or phrases.

For example, this service will generate a URL than can be entered into a news reader. The feed is updated each time an item is added to Amazon that meets the specified criteria or keywords - Amazon Search Feed - http://www.oxus.net/amazon/

    Ego / News Monitoring

Companies or individuals interested in receiving headline news based on a specific brand or keyword can use RSS feeds to monitor news sources.

For example, users can use the following tool to create a feed that will allow them to receive filtered news from Google News. They will only receive items related to a specific keyword or phrase they setup - http://www.justinpfister.com/gnewsfeed.php
