May 31st, 2008 The Family Stone (DVD) Review

One of the surprise films of 2005, The Family Stone successfully navigates the often tempestuous waters of big screen family dramas. Quite often these types of family relationship films get lost in a deluge of dialogue, conflict, and argument. And although The Family Stone has plenty of the aforementioned, it hits the audience in manageable doses with well-placed comic relief and an unforgettable cast of eccentric characters. Written and directed by up-and-coming Hollywood talent Thomas Bezucha, the film is a mosaic of fun, laughter, sadness, and family relationships most people will find charming and endearing…

The Family Stone examines the vibrant relationships of the Stone family, a close-knit traditional nuclear family gathering for the holidays. Sybil Stone (Diane Keaton) and her husband Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) host their children for the holidays, but as with most families, conflict is abundant. Sarcasm, backstabbing, blame, and jealousy are evident in almost every encounter, but ironically, so are love and respect. When eldest son Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings home his current girlfriend Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker) to meet the family, her business-like demeanor and uptight mannerisms clash with the rest of the family, particularly Everett’s vindictive sister Amy (Rachel McAdams). Despite Meredith’s best efforts, the only family member she can impress is Everett’s laidback brother Ben (Luke Wilson).

Meredith’s discomfort is compounded when she inadvertently makes a bigoted remark about Everett’s homosexual brother Thad (Tyrone Giordano), garnering the wrath of the entire family. Pushed to her breaking point, Meredith moves from the house to a nearby bed and breakfast, while Everett struggles with the idea of proposing to a woman his family obviously dislikes. Meanwhile, Ben helps Meredith to come out of her shell, and Meredith enlists the support of her younger sister Julie (Claire Danes) to smooth things over with the Stones. But the holidays take an interesting twist when unexpected relationships blossom and an unforeseen event takes its toll on the entire family…

The Family Stone certainly succeeds in creating a number of dynamic multidimensional characters, but it fails in a couple respects. The most obvious is the relationship switch that eventually takes place and is quite evidently in the making from the opening scenes of the film. One brother stealing another’s girlfriend is not in-and-of itself unbelievable, but the continuation of a normal relationship between the two brothers is. No awkwardness there? No jealousy? Plot twists are great, but keep them realistic…

The other aspect of The Family Stone that stands out is a bit more peripheral and makes the film teeter on the precipice of Hollywood cliché. Meredith is portrayed as an uptight homophobic bigot in need of a cure, while the Stone family is free-spirited and in touch with their feelings. In the end, Meredith grows because of her proximity to the Stones, but the Stones don’t learn anything from Meredith. It’s probably not a coincidence that Meredith’s views might be construed as conservative, while the Stones’ views are considered liberal (i.e. conservative evil, liberal good). This same theme was prevalent in Meet The Fockers when Robert De Niro’s character learns the error of his uptight ways and engages in the hippie lifestyle of his daughter’s new in-laws. But, of course, the Fockers never learn anything from De Niro… Not necessarily a movie killer, but a cliché nonetheless. Despite the flaws, The Family Stone is still a decent film. Above par dialogue and outstanding performances by a strong cast make it time well spent. Many moments will make you laugh; others will remind you of your own family…

May 31st, 2008 Sacrificing Long Term Value Creation for Short Term Profits!

In today’s corporate environment, professional corporate finance needs are increasing steadily. Major factors include the capital markets need for transparency in financial reporting and increasingly strict regulatory requirements. The need to fully comply with regulatory requirements can have numerous significant implications for an organization.

These include but are not limited to incurring large financial reporting cost, including investor communication and relations, constant pressure to meet reporting deadlines, and a lack of transparency of financial data and reporting processes.

Nevertheless, the highest cost corporations have to pay is for the constant “cat and mouse” game to meet quarterly and annual projections. This constant pressure to increase short term profits hinders the company to achieve long-term growth and value creation. Too much money is spent on analyzing, monitoring, communicating, and adjusting forecasts, resulting that the organization is not able to quickly respond to its competitive environment and think in terms of long term value creation.

It is vital for companies to realize that they have to weight the cost and benefits of these issues. Many companies are not up to the challenge and loose their competitive edge. They should always try not to sacrifice long term value creation for short term profits.

May 31st, 2008 Investing in World Markets

There are many different ways to invest in world markets: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, options, commodities or currencies. Sometimes people refer to these options as investment vehicles (or method of investment). Some of these vehicles may fit your personal characteristics or lifestyle better than others. The point is that no matter the method you choose to invest, the goal is always to put your money to work so it earns you a profit. Even though this is a simple idea, it is the most important idea you should understand.

Second important idea you should understand is that investing is not about gambling or betting. It is about money management, compounding and psychology. Investing in the world markets, of course, worth learning. The rewards will far outweigh the required effort.

It is impossible to accumulate all the information about investing in one site as it would result in a huge library of tens of millions pages in it. HeYou can find books to read, video courses to watch for your personal financial education at www.RichTrack.com.

Typical mistakes to avoid

1. You shouldn’t allow banks, or investment professionals to push your money in directions you don’t understand. No one knows better than you what is best for you and your money.

2. Many investors fail because they invest “on the fly”, without the benefit of any pre-determined trading plan. It is critical to have a complete, thought out plan of action before starting investing.

3. Trading against a trend. Trend is your friend. Investors who ignore price trends when trying to pick a stock’s peaks and bottoms are rarely successful.

4. Not adhering to a money management. Remember, money management and asset allocation strategy has significant impact to your investing success.

5. Lack of discipline. It is essential to have a list of rules that must be followed strictly.

May 31st, 2008 The Insider’s Test Management Tool

The testing stage of software development is definitely the most complex and arguably the most important. From my experience most organizations break down and drop the ball during the crucial testing stage. Success requires very effective test management. Most internal company organizations lack the training and time to effectively act out this vital stage in the software development process. Test management is the most difficult aspect of effective testing because testing requires input from various channels at differing times. Not only do you need to carefully map out tasks and responsibilities but you also need to know what the performance expectations are. I have found test management tools an invaluable resource in accomplishing these tasks. There are management tools for nearly all aspects of software testing including capturing requirements, storing test scripts, and defect management.

There are many different test management tools to choose from. The leader in the industry is by far Mercury Interactive TestDirector. Mercury is the global leader in business technology optimization (BTO). Mercury Interactive is one of the largest and fastest growing enterprise software companies in the world. Estimates show nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies, and even several government agencies around the world rely on Mercury Interactive to fulfill their BTO strategies. This is a company that you can rely on for high quality and consistent results. Their TestDirector program creates an uncomplicated way to execute and manage the testing process. The primary advantage of using a test management tool is to help you manage your testing in a quick and effective manner. These tools facilitate communication between involved parties and simultaneously cut down on the total amount of time spent developing and running tests. Common features of test management tools include the ability to repeat the process for gathering requirements, scheduling tests, analyzing results, and managing any defects. This adds confidence that your software is going meet performance expectations.

Some common questions Mercury Interactive recommends that you ask several questions before using TestDirector: Does your organization lack the software testing tools to deploy high-quality applications quickly and effectively? Does your organization have the appropriate level of communication, organization, documentation, and structure in place for every testing project? Do you have a consistent, repeatable testing process? Are you leveraging strategic sourcing initiatives for quality assurance? Answering these questions will help you better evaluate your organizations need for test management tools.

TestDirector has four modules: requirements, test plan, test lab and defects management which are integrated to enable a smooth flow of information between various aspects of the total testing process. It is completely web-enabled in order to efficiently support communication and cooperation among testing teams that are dispersed throughout a company. Utilizing a test management tool is truly a wise decision. The efficiency and reliability it brings to an organization exuberates confidence and control that will then be emulate in employee performance. As processes of integration smoothly take place employees gain greater trust in management and the of the company’s ability to be competitive and adapt. Complete and thorough software testing with the help of TestDirector will keep the business running smoothly during and after implementation.

The potential risk of after implementation finding bugs and glitches will cost you money to fix and a lot of productivity. Businesses are run on systems. Good businesses have good systems. Using test management software will ensure that your systems are built on a solid foundation.

May 31st, 2008 ISP Features

Internet service providers are becoming more and more present as the internet makes its way into more and more homes in America. This is making it harder to decide which ISP to subscribe to. In fact, most of them have a list of benefits to entice customers into subscribing from their ISP. Here is some information on the basic features that should come with a good ISP.

First, is of coarse security. With new viruses circulating the internet everyday, you can’t be too careful. That is why it is critical for ISP’s to offer virus protection. However, they are now offering popup blockers also. These troublesome ads can become so frustrating that they too can be considered harmful to your computer. This is why ISP’s have started furnishing tools to speed up customer’s computers and create a more enjoyable internet experience. They are also protecting children from the net by providing blocks controlled by parents to block adult material on the net.

Another, feature you want to have from your ISP is multiple e-mail accounts. In fact, many ISP’s provide between 5 and 10 e-mail accounts to one subscriber. This allows every member of the family to have their own e-mail account. That way a father doesn’t have to put up with the cutsie forwards his daughter receives, and she doesn’t have to put up with her father’s daily stock tips. This is the best way to go if you have a family. The more e-mail accounts the better since it is best to have a professional e-mail account, and another for less formal messages.

If you want your own web page posted on the net, you may be able to get one without the unwanted ads. This is because ISP’s are now offering free web space. This space is limited in size, but does not always have the ads that come with other free web spaces. In fact, your ISP may also provide a template or special tools such as counters to place on your site. You should check with your ISP before placing a business site on the web space provided by them. A lot of ISP’s will not allow that kind of use.

Your ISP may also provide for use from multiple computers in your home. This may be free or may cost you a small fee. However, with multiple access you can have the freedom of completing your work assignments online, while your son is researching for a school paper. Whatever you are looking for you may find it. The key is looking around and comparing the features with more than one ISP. This way you will find just the right features for you and your family.

May 31st, 2008 How To Establish Great Credit

Building a good credit history is important. If you have no reported credit history, it may take time to establish your first credit account. This problem affects young people just beginning careers as well as older people who have never used credit. It also affects divorced or widowed women who shared credit accounts that were reported only in the husband’s name.

If you do not know what is in your credit file, check with your local credit bureaus. Most cities have two or three credit bureaus, which are listed under “Credit” or “Credit Reporting Agencies” in the Yellow Pages. For a small fee, they will tell you what information is in your file and may give you a copy of your credit report.

If you have had credit before under a different name or in a different location and it is not reported in your file, ask the credit bureau to include it. If you shared accounts with a former spouse, ask the credit bureau to list these accounts under your name as well. Although credit bureaus are not required to add new accounts to your file, many will do so for a small fee. Finally, if you presently share in the use of a credit account with your spouse, ask the creditor to report it under both names.

Creditors are not required to report any account history information to credit bureaus. If a creditor does report on an account, however, and if both spouses are permitted to use the account or are contractually liable for its repayment, under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act you can require the creditor to report the information under both names. When contacting your creditor or credit bureau, do so in writing and include relevant information, such as account numbers, to help speed the process. As with all important business communications, keep a copy of what you send.

If you do not have a credit history, you should begin to build one. If you have a steady income and have lived in the same area for at least a year, try applying for credit with a local business, such as a department store. Or you might borrow a small amount from your credit union or the bank where you have checking and savings accounts.

A local bank or department store may approve your credit application even if you do not meet the standards of larger creditors. Before you apply for credit, ask whether the creditor reports credit history information to credit bureaus serving your area. Most creditors do, but some do not. If possible, you should try to get credit that will be reported. This builds your credit history.

If you are rejected for credit, find out why. There may be reasons other than lack of credit history. Your income may not meet the creditor’s minimum requirement or you may not have worked at your current job long enough. Time may resolve such problems. You could wait for a salary increase and then reapply, or simply apply to a different creditor. However, it’s best to wait at least 6 months before making each new application. Credit bureaus record each inquiry about you. Some creditors may deny your application, if they think you are trying to open too many new accounts too quickly.

If you still cannot get credit, you may wish to ask a person with an established credit history to act as your co-signer. Because a co-signer promises to pay if you don’t, this can substantially improve your chances of getting credit. Once you have repaid the debt, try again to get credit on your own.

May 29th, 2008 Guitar Tablature Offers The Best Way To Learn New Songs

No instrument has been more central during the past sixty years than the guitar. Although it has been around, in one form or another, for a long time, its attractiveness is at an all time high. No matter the playeryoung, old, and all points in betweenthe main lure of the instrument is having the ability to have some fun with a song that you love, usually one that you heard before. If you are at that point, then you should seriously consider learning about guitar tablature. Simply put, guitar tablature is the procedure that tells you what notes to play by showing where to put your fingers. Given that the tablature looks like the fret board, you do not need to have any knowledge reading tablatures to be able to follow along. Unlike a good number of musicians, guitar players are inclined to be exclusively self-taught. Trombonists and piano players nearly always start learning music in band or from private lessons. Guitar players may have had some lessons, but chances are you picked one up and began picking out melodies of the songs you liked. And if you have an unrestricted amount of time, do not change your approach. Conversely, if you would like a faster method, learning how to read guitar tablature will definitely speed things up! Once you learn to read the tabs, you have a powerful new approach to learning your favorite songs. Because tablature only tells you which note to play and how to play it, you still need to either be able to read music or listen to the song to be able to play the rhythms. If you look around the Internet, you will find an incredible number of tablatures, videos posted by other players that you can watch, and if the song you are looking for is not available, it should be in the near future. Playing by ear is ok for a while, but understanding and using guitar tablature will put the entire musical world at your fingertips.

May 29th, 2008 Setting up Shop: Your Guide to Creating a Great Office Space at Home

Whether your home office consists of a spacious basement suite or a miniscule bedroom corner, making the best of your space is so important. Location, furniture placement, and ambience will impact the ease and enjoyability with which you function.

First, identify your home office location. Will you be
working when others are at home? If noise and distractions are a concern, consider
finding the most secluded spot in your home. Any spare room bedroom, attic, or
basement where you can shut the door is great. If you don’t have an entire room
to work with, get creative. If you can give up a closet, consider emptying one and
installing a simple work surface inside. Add shelving above for supplies and
reference materials. Pull up a desk chair, and voila, instant mini office! When the
work day is done, simply shut the closet door and the office disappears. If you can’t
give up the closet space, try sectioning off a corner of any room with a fold-out
decorative screen.

Next, arrange your office furniture carefully. Consider whether you’ll need
lots of
surface space and where you plan to put your desk and computer. Other items, such
as filing drawers and book cases, can be placed next. Make sure to have good
lighting, both indirect and direct.

And finally, take the time to add a little “you” to the room. Paint the walls
a color
you love. Add artwork whether expensive originals or a child’s framed finger
paintings.
And add a little greenery in the form of a potted plant
or fresh flowers. Now it feels like home (office)!

May 29th, 2008 Custom Icons For Your Specific Brand

Developing a software application is not easy at all; apart from the effective creation of the application you’ll have to think of other things as well, like: making the software easy to work with, giving it a unique and appealing look, making it better than other software, etc. Apart from the qualities of the application, these little things are the ones that promote your software application among the end users. If the application is easy to use, has a friendly user interface, the look of the program is unique yet not too flashy a lot more people will want to have it and use it. On the other hand, we should be careful about the overall look of the entire application because if it looks too different or it is too striking, many of the new users will be reserved in trying it. The reticence might be coming from the fact that, due to the unconventional look, they will think that it is hard to work with this application. Also, the icons of the application must be eye-catching but not too flashy or different from the usual.

In order to have success with your software application it must be different from the others so to have some extra points in front of your competitors. Sometimes, it is not enough to have an application that is working very well because the competition might have the same type of application that has the same characteristics. You have to make your application stand out from the crowd and this can be done very easily. For example, you can make it different by customizing your icons. Using custom icons has many advantages compared with the free icons that can be easily found on the Internet. One of the advantages is the fact that your icons will be different from any other icons found in similar applications. Using free downloaded icons might be tricky because it is possible that somebody else used the same icons and this will not be good for the success of your application. End users might see it as a cheap solution and might refuse to give a fair chance to the software.

Another advantage for using custom icons is that the development process will be completely passed on to the designer of the icons, unless you decide to design them yourself. All you need to do is make the designer understand exactly what you need your icons to look like and how different they must be. Based on those indications the icon designer will produce some sketches that must be approved by you in order to proceed further with the final version of the icons. So, a lot of the work is on designer’s account which must have a lot of creativity in order to produce something unique. Involving a designer in the process of creating the icons for your application will save you a lot of precious time and also will reassure you that no other application will have icons like yours, so it will not be possible for end users to confound your software with others.

While you’re thinking of making custom icons for your application, take in consideration another idea: to make a custom set of icons. A set of icons contains all the possible icons that you will need for or in connection with an application. It does not matter that you will not need all of them from the beginning, because in time it is possible that you will need some extra icons and it is better to have them handy.

To make your application different from the others you can also use favicons, which is short for “favorite icons” also known as page icons. Basically, these types of icons are the ones that integrate into the other application like for example web-browsers. Often favicons represent the organization’s or website’s logo. They are used to build a more customized appearance for the respective application. The use of favicons has some advantages: your application will be easily recognized by the users in case they don’t remember the application’s name, it will promote the logo of the application, it will make your application look more professional, etc. Favicons are usually displayed into the web browsers, next to your website’s page and you’ll not see many applications or websites that have this facility.

Another thing you can do for making your application stand out of the competition is to have custom file type icons assigned to file types by default. Having these distinct file types is not difficult to achieve but they will make a big difference. The end user will have no problem in easily locating the files of your application among the other files. Besides that, having custom file type icons will be another way of promoting the logo of your application; the larger the number of icons and file type icons is, the larger will be the number of people to see and easily recognize your application.

Considering all the above we have to say that having a customized application is better that having one with a common look. Common looks can be easily confounded and the user will not see the difference between one application or the other unless they will definitely be different. For example, if he has two applications for the same purpose and the applications’ icons or file type icons are almost alike, he will choose the first one that he sees. But if one of the applications has a custom, easily recognizable icon he will know as soon as he sees it that this is the application that he’s looking for. These are only few tricks that software designers should take in consideration when making an application that has a commercial purpose.

May 28th, 2008 The Tales of the 0% APR Credit Card

People used to think that they had enough on their benefits with
their credit cards. They thought that the rewards they get and
the low interest they have is already enough to last a lifetime.

However, there are instances when they get to have the chance of
seeing promotions like 0% APR. Now, this is really something.
But the question is, is it true? Is there a great probability
that credit card companies can actually offer a 0% APR?

For most financial experts, they contend that it is, indeed,
possible. In fact, credit card companies would definitely go for
this kind of scheme just to get the consumers on their hook.

That sounds too good to be true, indeed. But the question is how
come they can offer something so good just like that?

Normally, 0% annual percentage rate or APR lasts only for 6
months. The countdown starts from the day the credit card is
claimed.

In most instances, 0% APR are attractive to people who would
want to have a balance transfer. This is because they would want
to consolidate all of their debts into one payment only. And
because they have a huge pile of debt, they would rather go to a
credit company that can offer them lower interest rates.

With things like 0% APR credit card, who can resist them?

Moreover, with the 6-month timeframe, people will get to have
the chance of paying their standing debts for a whole six
month-period only. That would be a lot of savings.

But then again, 0% APR credit cards are not at all beneficial to
everybody. As they say, there is always an exception to the
rule. This refers to those who do not accumulate interest
charges simply because they have outstanding balance. So, they
wouldn’t feel the necessity of getting a 0% APR credit card.

The best credit cards for these types of people are those that
offer rewards and cash backs instead of lower rates.

All of these boil down to one point, that people must be aware
on how these wonderful offers can provide them the benefit that
they want.

Indeed, there are lots of rewards and 0% APR credit card out
there. But if it will not work for those who do not really need
them because of the mentioned situations, then it’s best not to
have them at all. Besides, the best 0% reward is not to have a
credit card at all.
