April 26th, 2008 Hand and Power Tools

Tools are such a common part of our lives that it is difficult to remember that they may pose hazards. All tools are manufactured with safety in mind but, tragically, a serious accident often occurs before steps are taken to search out and avoid or eliminate tool-related hazards.

In the process of removing or avoiding the hazards, workers must learn to recognize the hazards associated with the different types of tools and the safety precautions necessary to prevent those hazards.

HAND TOOLS

Hand tools are non-powered. They include anything from axes to wrenches. The greatest hazards posed by hand tools result from misuse and improper maintenance.

Some examples:
Using a screwdriver as a chisel may cause the tip of the screwdriver to break and fly, hitting the user or other employees.
If a wooden handle on a tool such as a hammer or an axe is loose, splintered, or cracked, the head of the tool may fly off and strike the user or another worker.
A wrench must not be used if its jaws are sprung, because it might slip.
Impact tools such as chisels, wedges, or drift pins are unsafe if they have mushroomed heads. The heads might shatter on impact, sending sharp fragments flying.
The employer is responsible for the safe condition of tools and equipment used by employees but the employees have the responsibility for properly using and maintaining tools.

Employers should caution employees that saw blades, knives, or other tools be directed away from aisle areas and other employees working in close proximity. Knives and scissors must be sharp. Dull tools can be more hazardous than sharp ones.

Appropriate personal protective equipment, e.g., safety goggles, gloves, etc., should be worn due to hazards that may be encountered while using portable power tools and hand tools.

Safety requires that floors be kept as clean and dry as possible to prevent accidental slips with or around dangerous hand tools.

Around flammable substances, sparks produced by iron and steel hand tools can be a dangerous ignition source. Where this hazard exists, spark-resistant tools made from brass, plastic, aluminum, or wood will provide for safety.

POWER TOOL PRECAUTIONS

Power tools can be hazardous when improperly used. There are several types of power tools, based on the power source they use: electric, pneumatic, liquid fuel, hydraulic, and powder-actuated.

Employees should be trained in the use of all tools - not just power tools. They should understand the potential hazards as well as the safety precautions to prevent those hazards from occurring.

Power tool users should observe the following general precautions:
Never carry a tool by the cord or hose.
Never yank the cord or the hose to disconnect it from the receptacle.
Keep cords and hoses away from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
Disconnect tools when not in use, before servicing, and when changing accessories such as blades, bits and cutters.
All observers should be kept at a safe distance away from the work area.
Secure work with clamps or a vise, freeing both hands to operate the tool.
Avoid accidental starting. The worker should not hold a finger on the switch button while carrying a plugged-in tool.
Tools should be maintained with care. They should be kept sharp and clean for the best performance. Follow instructions in the user’s manual for lubricating and changing accessories.
Be sure to keep good footing and maintain good balance.
The proper apparel should be worn. Loose clothing, ties, or jewelry can become caught in moving parts.
All portable electric tools that are damaged shall be removed from use and tagged “Do Not Use.”

GUARDS

Hazardous moving parts of a power tool need to be safeguarded. For example, belts, gears, shafts, pulleys, sprockets, spindles, drums, fly wheels, chains, or other reciprocating, rotating, or moving parts of equipment must be guarded if such parts are exposed to contact by employees.

Guards, as necessary, should be provided to protect the operator and others from the following:
point of operation,
in-running nip points,
rotating parts, and
flying chips and sparks.
Safety guards must never be removed when a tool is being used. For example, portable circular saws must be equipped with guards. An upper guard must cover the entire blade of the saw. A retractable lower guard must cover the teeth of the saw, except when it makes contact with the work material. The lower guard must automatically return to the covering position when the tool is withdrawn from the work.

SAFETY SWITCHES

The following hand-held powered tools must be equipped with a momentary contact “on-off” control switch: drills, tappers, fastener drivers, horizontal, vertical and angle grinders with wheels larger than 2 inches in diameter, disc and belt sanders, reciprocating saws, saber saws, and other similar tools. These tools also may be equipped with a lock-on control provided that a single motion of the same finger or fingers that turn it on can accomplish turnoff.

The following hand-held powered tools may be equipped with only a positive “on-off” control switch: platen sanders, disc sanders with discs 2 inches or less in diameter; grinders with wheels 2 inches or less in diameter; routers, planers, laminate trimmers, nibblers, shears, scroll saws and jigsaws with blade shanks <-inch wide or less.

Other hand-held powered tools such as circular saws having a blade diameter greater than 2 inches, chain saws, and percussion tools without positive accessory holding means must be equipped with a constant pressure switch that will shut off the power when the pressure is released.

ELECTRIC TOOLS

Employees using electric tools must be aware of several dangers; the most serious is the possibility of electrocution.

Among the chief hazards of electric-powered tools are burns and slight shocks which can lead to injuries or even heart failure. Under certain conditions, even a small amount of current can result in fibrillation of the heart and eventual death. A shock also can cause the user to fall off a ladder or other elevated work surface.

To protect the user from shock, tools must either have a three-wire cord with ground and be grounded, be double insulated, or be powered by a low-voltage isolation transformer. Three-wire cords contain two current-carrying conductors and a grounding conductor. One end of the grounding conductor connects to the tool’s metal housing. The other end is grounded through a prong on the plug. Anytime an adapter is used to accommodate a two-hole receptacle, the adapter wire must be attached to a known ground. The third prong should never be removed from the plug.

Double insulation is more convenient. The user and the tools are protected in two ways: by normal insulation on the wires inside, and by a housing that cannot conduct electricity to the operator in the event of a malfunction.

These general practices should be followed when using electric tools:
Electric tools should be operated within their design limitations.
Gloves and safety footwear are recommended during use of electric tools.
When not in use, tools should be stored in a dry place.
Electric tools should not be used in damp or wet locations.
Work areas should be well lighted.

POWERED ABRASIVE WHEEL TOOLS

Powered abrasive grinding, cutting, polishing, and wire buffing wheels create special safety problems because they may throw off flying fragments.

Before an abrasive wheel is mounted, it should be inspected closely and sound- or ring-tested to be sure that it is free from cracks or defects. To test, wheels should be tapped gently with a light non-metallic instrument. If they sound cracked or dead, they could fly apart in operation and so must not be used. A sound and undamaged wheel will give a clear metallic tone or “ring.”

To prevent the wheel from cracking, the user should be sure it fits freely on the spindle. The spindle nut must be tightened enough to hold the wheel in place, without distorting the flange. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Care must be taken to assure that the spindle wheel will not exceed the abrasive wheel specifications.

Due to the possibility of a wheel disintegrating (exploding) during start-up, the employee should never stand directly in front of the wheel as it accelerates to full operating speed.

Portable grinding tools need to be equipped with safety guards to protect workers not only from the moving wheel surface, but also from flying fragments in case of breakage.

In addition, when using a powered grinder:
Always use eye protection.
Turn off the power when not in use.
Never clamp a hand-held grinder in a vise.

PNEUMATIC TOOLS

Pneumatic tools are powered by compressed air and include chippers, drills, hammers, and sanders.

There are several dangers encountered in the use of pneumatic tools. The main one is the danger of getting hit by one of the tool’s attachments or by some kind of fastener the worker is using with the tool.

Eye protection is required and face protection is recommended for employees working with pneumatic tools.

Noise is another hazard. Working with noisy tools such as jackhammers requires proper, effective use of hearing protection.

When using pneumatic tools, employees must check to see that they are fastened securely to the hose to prevent them from becoming disconnected. A short wire or positive locking device attaching the air hose to the tool will serve as an added safeguard.

A safety clip or retainer must be installed to prevent attachments, such as chisels on a chipping hammer, from being unintentionally shot from the barrel.

Screens must be set up to protect nearby workers from being struck by flying fragments around chippers, riveting guns, staplers, or air drills.

Compressed air guns should never be pointed toward anyone. Users should never “dead-end” it against themselves or anyone else.

POWDER-ACTUATED TOOLS

Powder-actuated tools operate like a loaded gun and should be treated with the same respect and precautions. In fact, they are so dangerous that only specially trained employees must operate them.

Safety precautions to remember include the following:
These tools should not be used in an explosive or flammable atmosphere.
Before using the tool, the worker should inspect it to determine that it is clean, that all moving parts operate freely, and that the barrel is free from obstructions.
The tool should never be pointed at anybody.
The tool should not be loaded unless it is to be used immediately. A loaded tool should not be left unattended, especially where it would be available to unauthorized persons.
Hands should be kept clear of the barrel end. To prevent the tool from firing accidentally, two separate motions are required for firing: one to bring the tool into position, and another to pull the trigger. The tools must not be able to operate until they are pressed against the work surface with a force of at least 5 pounds greater than the total weight of the tool.

If a powder-actuated tool misfires, the employee should wait at least 30 seconds, then try firing it again. If it still will not fire, the user should wait another 30 seconds so that the faulty cartridge is less likely to explode, than carefully remove the load. The bad cartridge should be put in water.

Suitable eye and face protection are essential when using a powder-actuated tool.

The muzzle end of the tool must have a protective shield or guard centered perpendicularly on the barrel to confine any flying fragments or particles that might otherwise create a hazard when the tool is fired. The tool must be designed so that it will not fire unless it has this kind of safety device.

All powder-actuated tools must be designed for varying powder charges so that the user can select a powder level necessary to do the work without excessive force.

If the tool develops a defect during use it should be tagged and taken out of service immediately until it is properly repaired.

FASTENERS

When using powder-actuated tools to apply fasteners, there are some precautions to consider. Fasteners must not be fired into material that would let them pass through to the other side. The fastener must not be driven into materials like brick or concrete any closer than 3 inches to an edge or corner. In steel, the fastener must not come any closer than one-half inch from a corner or edge. Fasteners must not be driven into very hard or brittle materials which might chip or splatter, or make the fastener ricochet.

An alignment guide must be used when shooting a fastener into an existing hole. A fastener must not be driven into a spalled area caused by an unsatisfactory fastening.

HYDRAULIC POWER TOOLS

The fluid used in hydraulic power tools must be an approved fire-resistant fluid and must retain its operating characteristics at the most extreme temperatures to which it will be exposed.

The manufacturer’s recommended safe operating pressure for hoses, valves, pipes, filters, and other fittings must not be exceeded.

JACKS

All jacks - lever and ratchet jacks, screw jacks, and hydraulic jacks - must have a device that stops them from jacking up too high. Also, the manufacturer’s load limit must be permanently marked in a prominent place on the jack and should not be exceeded.

A jack should never be used to support a lifted load. Once the load has been lifted, it must immediately be blocked up.

Use wooden blocking under the base if necessary to make the jack level and secure. If the lift surface is metal, place a 1-inch-thick hardwood block or equivalent between it and the metal jack head to reduce the danger of slippage.

To set up a jack, make certain of the following:
the base rests on a firm level surface,
the jack is correctly centered,
the jack head bears against a level surface, and
the lift force is applied evenly.
Proper maintenance of jacks is essential for safety. All jacks must be inspected before each use and lubricated regularly. If a jack is subjected to an abnormal load or shock, it should be thoroughly examined to make sure it has not been damaged.

Hydraulic jacks exposed to freezing temperatures must be filled with an adequate antifreeze liquid.

April 26th, 2008 Narcissistic Personality Disorder Tips

FIVE DON’T DO’S

How to Avoid the Wrath of the Narcissist

  • Never disagree with the narcissist or contradict him

  • Never offer him any intimacy

  • Look awed by whatever attribute matters to him (for instance: by his professional achievements or by his good looks, or by his success with women and so on)

  • Never remind him of life out there and if you do, connect it somehow to his sense of grandiosity

  • Do not make any comment, which might directly or indirectly impinge on his self-image, omnipotence, judgment, omniscience, skills, capabilities, professional record, or even omnipresence. Bad sentences start with: “I think you overlooked … made a mistake here … you don’t know … do you know … you were not here yesterday so … you cannot … you should … (perceived as rude imposition, narcissists react very badly to restrictions placed on their freedom) … I (never mention the fact that you are a separate, independent entity, narcissists regard others as extensions of their selves, their internalization processes were screwed up and they did not differentiate properly) …” You get the gist of it.

The TEN DO’S

How to Make your Narcissist Dependent on You

If you INSIST on Staying with Him

  • Listen attentively to everything the narcissist says and agree with it all. Don’t believe a word of it but let it slide as if everything is just fine, business as usual.

  • Personally offer something absolutely unique to the narcissist which they cannot obtain anywhere else. Also be prepared to line up future sources of primary NS for your narcissist because you will not be IT for very long, if at all. If you take over the procuring function for the narcissist, they become that much more dependent on you which makes it a bit tougher for them to pull their haughty stuff - an inevitability, in any case.

  • Be endlessly patient and go way out of your way to be accommodating, thus keeping the narcissistic supply flowing liberally, and keeping the peace (relatively speaking).

  • Be endlessly giving. This one may not be attractive to you, but it is a take it or leave it proposition.

  • Be absolutely emotionally and financially independent of the narcissist. Take what you need: the excitement and engulfment and refuse to get upset or hurt when the narcissist does or says something dumb, rude, or insensitive. Yelling back works really well but should be reserved for special occasions when you fear your narcissist may be on the verge of leaving you; the silent treatment is better as an ordinary response, but it must be carried out without any emotional content, more with the air of boredom and “I’ll talk to you later, when I am good and ready, and when you are behaving in a more reasonable fashion”.

  • If your narcissist is cerebral and NOT interested in having much sex - then give yourself ample permission to have “hidden” sex with other people. Your cerebral narcissist will not be indifferent to infidelity so discretion and secrecy is of paramount importance.

  • If your narcissist is somatic and you don’t mind, join in on endlessly interesting group sex encounters but make sure that you choose properly for your narcissist. They are heedless and very undiscriminating in respect of sexual partners and that can get very problematic (STDs and blackmail come to mind).

  • If you are a “fixer”, then focus on fixing situations, preferably before they become “situations”. Don’t for one moment delude yourself that you can FIX the narcissist - it simply will not happen. Not because they are being stubborn - they just simply can’t be fixed.

  • If there is any fixing that can be done, it is to help your narcissist become aware of their condition, and this is VERY IMPORTANT, with no negative implications or accusations in the process at all. It is like living with a physically handicapped person and being able to discuss, calmly, unemotionally, what the limitations and benefits of the handicap are and how the two of you can work with these factors, rather than trying to change them.

  • FINALLY, and most important of all: KNOW YOURSELF.

What are you getting from the relationship? Are you actually a masochist? A codependent perhaps? Why is this relationship attractive and interesting?

Define for yourself what good and beneficial things you believe you are receiving in this relationship.

Define the things that you find harmful TO YOU. Develop strategies to minimize the harm to yourself. Don’t expect that you will cognitively be able to reason with the narcissist to change who they are. You may have some limited success in getting your narcissist to tone down on the really harmful behaviours THAT AFFECT YOU which emanate from the unchangeable WHAT the narcissist is. This can only be accomplished in a very trusting, frank and open relationship.

April 26th, 2008 Guide for Selecting a Villa Near Disney in Orlando Florida

This article is meant to be a guide for those who wish to enjoy their holidays in an ideal spot - a villa in or near Orlando. But where does one find something close to the theme parks, in close proximity to fine dining and luxury shopping and around all of your other amenities that your family might need on a vacation? Is there any hard and fast answer to the best price and if so, what about renting a villa for the lowest price?

The Villa rental dilemma is not a new puzzle. Since the early days of Central Florida tourism (pre-dating Walt Disney, if you can imagine Orlando without the presence of Mickey and the sprawling complex of Walt Disney World itself),the early tourists seemed to favor the areas away from Central Florida. Near to the oceans and their cooling breezes- but also away from the threat of hurricanes, and after the slate of hot hotels were built on Miami Beach, the seashores were never the same. Congestion and high prices eventually led the family vacation crowd to question the idea of spending their hard earned vacation dollars strictly at the shore with every other family. The idea of spending time in scenic central Florida grew in popularity after such theme parks and attractions as Cypress Gardens and Gator World (amongst other cheap vacation thrills) started springing up in Kissimmee, Florida, and the outlying areas in and around the Orlando area. Walt Disney certainly changed the face of real estate and villa rentals in Florida. The properties in and around Kissimmee, Florida began to swell in price, ruling out the idea of Kissimmee as Mickey’s lowest price, most close neighbor.

The areas that lie just beyond the immediate neon glow of the accommodations along International Drive, beyond the low cost tee shirt shops and other urban sprawl that creeps near the perimeter of Disney World, has many advantages for the hard working vacationing family. If you’d like to watch the kids catch an occasional firefly near your villa rental, one needs to think outside of the box. That is to say, a family can save money and still enjoy a low cost holiday lodging at a villa rental in nearby cities such as Davenport. Just as an example, Davenport, Florida is accessible via the us 192 corridor to all of the major attractions, theme parks and yet it is known as a place where you can actually see the night sky stars instead of just viewing neon. The deals to be found in and around places like Davenport are numerous, and your family will also get to enjoy some specials and unique attractions that most of the International Drive tourists scarcely get to sample. Your rental villa will most likely be near some luxury outlet shopping malls, a short drive to the area’s favorite spot for wine connoisseurs- Lakeridge Winery, nestled in the rolling hills of Clermont, Florida, close to the Davenport, Florida area. Take us highway 27 north to tour the winery and let the kids see a winery actually produce award winning wines while the older members of the family can partake in a few samples of their delicious wines and grape juices. If you are looking for a rental villa location in Clermont itself, there are not too many available for lodging. The area more close to the Afour corners area of South lake County, near the U.S. highway 192 corridor, has a larger selection of vacation villa rentals and possibly more last minute discounts to offer families on vacation. Simply taking the U.S. highway 27 south will give one plenty of choices in resorts, time shares, and other assorted rentals. Perhaps your family may want to surf the web to find the best price. What criteria would you use in order to get the most for your money while enveloping your family in the kinds of resort ambiance that you will remember fondly for years to come?

The first step in your search would obviously be to narrow down your list of who exactly will be in your vacation family. Kids will usually want to invite a friend or two, but lodging considerations may be necessary for nannies or disabled adult care givers. The number of bedrooms is a big consideration, as well as the number of available beds in the actual sleeping areas. Don’t feel bad for asking the resort if they count the sleeping sofa as one of the beds, since some of your family might want more privacy than this sort of accommodation would offer.

Next step in trying to determine what sort of villa rental that your family would like is to work on the family budget, and see how close the prices and specials that you are seeing online comes to being near or below your budget. Some families prefer to scrimp on their lodging and rationalize that they will only be sleeping at their cheap rental, but this strategy can backfire. The rainiest days can mean that your family will spend more time in the resort or your villa than you had planned. Of course, you will also need to plan for taking a safe family vacation, and your rental villa should be in a well lit, secure location, nowhere near the areas that look like the cheap part of town. The rental villa should have the same safety features that you would look for in your own home - a deadbolt lock on the door, and a peephole that would reveal the identity of anyone who chooses to knock on your door. Of course, you will also need to carefully scrutinize the lodging for signs of age, and ask how old the property is. If the resort or villa is over ten years of age, does it truly look too dated or lived in for your family’s comfort? Take a look at the website of the timeshare or vacation villa rental property- do they have photos of the actual guest accommodations? And what about your Villa in Orlando being near fine dining, or casual dining for the family? A careful look at a villa would also mean being able to pinpoint exactly where the property lies- how close is it to the attractions that your kids want to visit? Is there a laundry room on the premises for your last minute laundry disasters? What about the villa rental makes you want to look at the brochure more than once? Whatever the drawing factor is, chances are that your taste in lodging is around the same as the rest of your family’s taste in rentals. That being said, it doesn’t hurt to have an informal meeting with the family to discuss the unique likes, dislikes and needs of everyone who will be near and dear to you on your vacation. Maybe the kids have always wanted to travel to Walt Disney World, but perhaps another member of your crew that will spend time being around you will want to visit the Fantasy of Flight vintage airplane attraction. Taking a look at the areas around the Central Florida area, and finding the best price for your dream villa in Orlando can take a lot of planning, research and communication. But it will be a wonderful vacation for your family to savor for a lifetime, when you take the time to plan your vacation villa rental in central Florida.

April 26th, 2008 The Worlds Interesting Adult Sex Toy Survey for Chicks to Use

So marital aid are on the lips of every boy these days, either talking about them in the web chats, at the ice rink or on the television. But which marital aid is the favourite, with the large choice to pick from surely a person had to find out the best one.

A sex toy company asked over one hundred and thirty shoppers in December what their best marital aid was along with other personal questions.

If you love sex toys you should try out Butt Plugs

It was that the most best marital aid for shoppers was the vibrator, and they just really liked it! Chicks were so excited by the idea of a massive vibrator that many of them would use it straight after coming home from work. The best kinds of vibrator were the bunny vibrators as they help to stimulate the clitoris hood as well as inserting into the flower.

The 2nd most popular marital aid was the exciting dildo dong. Dildo dongs are similar to vibrators except they don?t have batteries or vibrate. Dildo dongs come in all shapes and sizes from eight inches to 12 inches. They can come with sucker cups to have an incredible experience hands free and can easily attach to a bath or toilet set. Dildo dongs have been a firm best seller since the 70s and looks like they will be around for a long time.

So it was decided that the vibrator was the winner and the dildo came in second place, with some many sex toys out there it was difficult to know which type of vibrator was the most exciting for women to try. The standard vibrator sex toys are battery powered and shaped like a blokes penis. Standard vibrator sex toys are shaped just like the real thing and use batteries for power. Stardard vibrators can be manufactured of plastic, vinyl metal or silicone. Stardard vibrators can either be popped in or placed against your vagina to get the sexual sensation. We supply a wide range of standard vibrator sex toys.

The nicest way to use standard vibrator sex toys is to make sure it is germ free before use, make sure it is not too giant for your vagina, and also make sure that you do not use it every Monday night and you do venture out on a date to the disco.

April 24th, 2008 Financial Intelligence - Compounding (The Ninth Wonder of the World)

Compounding: The Ninth Wonder of the World
By Nicola Cairncross

Compounding is often described as the ninth wonder of the world. It is a concept that initially sounds quite dull, but when you understand how compounding just quietly works its magic - or conversely its naughtiness - it’s a very exciting concept to grasp indeed!

Compounding is the difference between linear and exponential growth, or put more simply, about earning (or incurring) interest on the interest on the interest, generated by your savings (or your debt). On an energy level, it’s about making sure that every little bit of effort you expend, workson many different levels to bring a reward greater than the original effort required.

It’s a very powerful tool and can be likened to the wind under the wings of a jet. The plane creeps slowly, slowly along the approach runways, then moves into position, then starts down the runway slowly, but as it picks up speed, the power of the engines and the wind lifts its wings and it takes off, climbing very quickly and steeply into the sky.

Compounding can turn just one - just one - £1 or $1into a million pounds or dollars within 20 years. If you took £1 or $1 and achieved a 100% return on your money each year (put another way, if you doubled your money each year) then you would most certainly be a millionaire in your lifetime. Imagine if you added another £1 or $1 each year - how much faster would that get you there?

And if compounding is that powerful when applied annually, how much powerful could it be when applied monthly or even daily?

On a personal finance level, most people ignore the potential of compounding, because the % interest rates we are quoted by the banks, other savings vehicles and financial institutions are so paltry. If you took yourpound or dollar and increased it at the usual 3% or 4% per annum, then it would grow so slowly that we might as well not bother saving at all. You would be dead several times over before your personal wealth increased noticeably.

I know I used to feel like that! Why save now, I thought, especially when you are only saving to spend later, and when you can only earn 3-4% per year on your savings? I want to share with you, today, some of the exciting things that I learned about the power of compounding, things made a huge difference to my thinking about money. And changed me from a non-saver to an investor in one fell swoop!

There is a huge difference between saving and investing, and experienced Investors achieve returns on their money between 30% and 100% per annum - some even manage to achieve an infinity return on their investment, because they are able to pull their own money back out of the deal, which means that they are making money with no money! These are the supermodels of the investment world!

On a personal finance front, even looking at the returns generated by investing in property over the years (12% per annum) and the stockmarket (14% per annum) gets a little more exciting. The compounding effect means that, on average, property doubles in value every 7-10 years - that’s a thrilling thought! How would you plan your property investment differently if you knew that to be true?

There is a great example of the difference in what you can achieve in just two years, if you invest £60,000 (or dollars! I’m going to work in pounds now but the principle is the same!) by buying outright one small rental unit, versus what you would achieve if you invested the same £60,000 in deposits on several small rental units.

At the end of the two years, if you just bought the one unit, and assuming average rates of growth, you would be worth £6384 more than when you started. But if you invested in deposits on several units, you would be £56,304 better off. You choose. That’s compounding at work.

On a business level, compounding can work for you too. The difference between what you can earn if you are a solo self-employed person, and what you can earn if you build a business consisting of a team of “you’s” is quite amazing.

The compounding effect can also be utilised in your business by automating as many of your business processes as possible. Think of the potential difference between having the services of one marketing person and one sales person (both of whom can only work so many hours in a day, both have to be paid, even when they are on holiday or off sick, so not working) and then consider the possibilities of having an automated marketing machine working 24/7 plus a team of affiliates - unlimited numbers of independent people who are all being paid a little bit, on sales (results only!) to promote your service or product.

April 24th, 2008 Molding Leather Armor

In order to mould leather armor, soak it in water until it becomes pliable and soft. Then place it in the mould until it dries and hardens.

Cuir Bouilli

The application of heat will make the leather harder. If you were making a cover for a shield, for example, or other pieces of leather amour, the leather would be dipped quickly in boiling water before being moulded. This is called ‘cuir bouilli’, a process employed in making leather armor.

Using vegetable tanned leather with at least a weight of 8 ounces, soak the piece in cold water. This will ensure a uniform absorption when the leather armor is placed in the boiling water. Heat a pot of water to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, then immerse the wet leather for approximately thirty seconds to a minute, until it darkens and begins to curl.

Remove the leather from the water and stretch it around the mould you have prepared, tacking it in place. Allow for shrinkage if you are cutting the leather armor from a pattern. Of course you can water-harden a larger piece of leather, flatten it under a cutting board, and then cut out the individual pieces of leather armor you want, and then mould them to the desired shape. At this stage it will be very stretchy.

The boiling process makes the leather armor thicker and harder, with a degree of shrinkage dependent upon the leather itself and the amount of immersion time. The longer it remains in the water, the more pronounced the effects.

A twenty second immersion can result in a shrinkage of 7/8s, with a thickening of 25%, while a forty second immersion results in a 2/3rds shrinkage and a doubling of the thickness. As in any aspect of leather working, it is best to experiment with scrap pieces of leather first to get the effect you want.

Types of Moulds / Single Mould

Moulds can consist of one or more pieces. Folding the leather around the actual object for which a cover is being made, where the mould is the object, is an option when making a case for a gun, an arm guard in archery, a sheaf for a knife or eye-caps for binoculars. Use tacks to hold it in place while it dries.

A Two-piece Mould

A two-piece mould acts like two slices of bread, with the leather being the sandwich filling. In this way, leather armor shields were made. The leather armor is left in the mould until it dries.

A Three-piece Mould

A three-piece mould allows the creation of items like bags and eyeglass cases without using a gusset. The leather is sewn on three sides. Two pieces of the mould are inserted on either side of the interior of the wet leather, and then a wedge is driven between the middle. The forms are left until the leather is dried.

Tools to Use

* Wooden mould

* Brass or steel tacks

Summary

* Make a mould to form the leather to the desired shape

* Wet the leather

* One piece mould: fit the wet leather armor over the mould

* Two piece mould: sandwich the leather between the mould

* Three piece mould: fit the pieces inside the leather

* Leave the leather armor to dry before removing
